Deputy Ryan Demby was in a bar shortly after midnight when an argument broke out between patrons, during which, one person pulled out a gun and began firing, striking him several times.

Investigators believe a verbal argument happened before the shooting.

Upon arrival at the bar in the 1100 block of South Charles Street, police say that officers found the 23-year-old deputy suffering from several life-threatening gunshot wounds.

He was rushed to the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he died from his injuries later on Friday morning.

The incident is now under investigation by the Baltimore Police Department.

"Our hearts are broken for the Demby family, Ryan's friends and colleagues, and our entire sheriff's office family," a spokesperson for the agency said. "We will continue to keep our community updated and are grateful for your support during this difficult time."
